We were tasked by Ad Agency of the Year, King James, with crafting a custom Facebook Canvas Application for Europcar. The App was named "RoadTripper" and allows users that have "Liked" the Facebook page the ability to create their road trips and share their trip experiences with friends, via a visually plotted trip.
How does it do this? The application integrated with the Google Maps API and presented a custom map experience allowing users to plot road trips with up to 10 specific waypoints; upload & select photos from their trip; and display photos for each waypoint. The Facebook App also integrated with the Panoramio Images API (also owned by Google) to enable users to access user generated content. A third API integration was made with Foursquare API to allow users to plan their road trips, by browsing waypoint specific information like sightseeing tips, specials in the area, events and more, which helps users to plan their holidays via the App.
Users can create multiple routes and share these with friends, who are invited to view the route in playback mode.
Key components in the technical development phase included:
- Wireframing the solution
- Technical planning
- Umbraco CMS set-up and template implementation
- Facebook API integration to access user details and to display user data
- Panaramio API integration
- Foursquare API integration
- Google Maps API integration
- Database to capture and display all user generated content
- Google Analytics setup to track user behaviour
